June 12, 2017
The QRMDA has partnered with Common Roots Urban Farm, RBC and HRM (Parks, Recreation & Communities) to bring some seasonal colour to Quinpool Road. Next month we will be placing 27 planters, in clusters along Quinpool Road; from the former St. Pat’s site, all the way down to Halifax Vet, on both sides of the street. They will contain a variety of edible flowers, fresh herbs and vegetables. Marigolds and nasturtiums, dill and kale, red cabbage and eggplant are just some of the plants that will be used in the planters. They will be planted and cared for by volunteers from Common Roots. The volunteers will also be given the opportunity to add their favourites to the planters.
To prepare the planters for the street, we are having a Planting Day on June 13 at Common Roots Urban Farm. Volunteers from Common Roots Urban Farm, QRMDA and HRM will be joined by employees from RBC who have chosen this initiative for their 2017 Day of Service. They will be with us throughout the day, helping to prepare the planters and doing some of the planting. It is going to be a long day so thank you to Freeman’s Little New York who have offered to keep all of our volunteers well fed!
